The United States Geological Survey observed an underwater earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale near the Prince Edward Islands, located at 43.078°S, 42.226°E, at 22:01 (local time) on Tuesday, January 22. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi) and the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre has not issued any tsunami alert as of 22:30. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.
