According to local sources, the man had recently moved to the area with his family to petition for increased civil rights amongst the indigenous community of Colombia. The Cauca regional government has vowed to increase security patrols in the department due to the ever-deteriorating security situation in the region, especially against members of the indigenous community in recent years. An investigation into the incident has been launched by local authorities.
