Strong wind warning in effect for Tuvalu due to tropical disturbance February 20; associated disruptions expected

A strong wind warning is in effect for Tuvalu as of Thursday, February 20, with possible gusts of up to 64 kph (39 mph). Tropical Disturbance 08F hit the islands on Tuesday, February 18, bringing winds of up to 111 kph (69 mph), heavy rain, and dangerous waves.

The Fiji Meteorological service has reported the risk of the tropical disturbance becoming a cyclone over the next 24 to 48 hours is moderate as the weather system moves southeast.

Individuals in Tuvalu are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate lingering transportation and business disruptions, confirm flight reservations, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
