Nigeria: Joint security forces target militants in Borno state April 6

Event

The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) launched operations targeting Boko Haram militants around the Lake Chad area of Borno state on Monday, April 6. Ground and air forces from Niger and Nigeria participated in the assault, which reportedly left at least 19 suspected militants dead. Security forces also destroyed two gun trucks and captured two others. Weapons, ammunition, and four motorcycles were recovered.

Further operations targeting militants in the Lake Chad region are likely over the near term.

Context

Although regional counterinsurgency efforts begun in 2015 and led by West African states Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger have diminished Boko Haram's effective territorial control, northeastern Nigeria remains Boko Haram's stronghold and is host to most of the group's militant activity.
