UK: Strong storm to hit large swaths of the country March 8-9

Strong storm to hit several parts of the UK March 8-9; strong winds, snow, heavy rain, flooding expected

Warning

Event

On Sunday, March 8, a strong storm is expected to hit Scotland, Wales, and northern and central England, bringing strong winds, rain, snow, and flooding. The inclement weather is expected to last through Monday, March 9. This follows weeks of storms throughout the country and record rainfalls in many areas, prompting the Met Office to declare this past February the wettest February on record.

Associated transportation disruptions, including flight and train delays and cancelations, are to be expected over the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, prepare for winter weather, and anticipate transportation disruptions, including flight delays and adverse driving conditions, and power outages. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
