India: Hundreds rally against controversial citizenship bill December 9

Protests erupted across India on Monday, December 9, in response to controversial bill that seeks to provide citizenship to non-Muslim minorities in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Opponents of the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) claim the legislation is in violation of the constitution, which prohibits religious discrimination against citizens. In Assam state, protesters blocked roads and burned tires; significant business and transportation disruptions were reported in four of the state's districts. Demonstrations were also held in Gujarat state and Kolkata (West Bengal state). Further protests are possible in the coming days.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected near any protest site.

The CAB was originally introduced in 2016 but was tabled due to widespread protests denouncing the legislation.
