Angola: Flooding in Luanda kills 11 people April 18-20

Heavy rains on the morning (local time) of Saturday, April 18, caused deadly flooding throughout the capital Luanda. According to the Provincial Civil Protection Commission, at least 11 people have died in the flooding as of Monday, April 20. Over 10,000 residents have also been affected and are living in temporary housing after their homes were damaged or destroyed. Fatalities were recorded in the municipalities of Kilamba Kiaxi and Talatona. Several roads in Luanda were inundated and blocked by the flood waters. Associated transportation and business disruptions are expected in the affected areas.

Additional rain is forecast in Luanda on Tuesday, April 21, and further flooding is possible in the city.

Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
