Islamic State-West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants claim to have killed seven soldiers and captured three others in an ambush on a military convoy in Borno state's Marte Local Government Area (LGA) on Thursday, November 26. The improvised explosive device (IED) attack occurred on the Marte-Dikwa road. Militants also allegedly destroyed two SUVs and stole ammunition in the attack. Nigerian military forces have not commented on the incident.
Security operations are possible in the vicinity of the incident in the coming days. Further militant attacks are likely across Borno state over the near term.
Context
The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and ISWAP. Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.
