Mozambique: Attack on military base leaves 22 dead in Cabo Delgado province January 23

Event

Insurgents attacked a military base in Mbau (Cabo Delgado province) on Thursday, January 23, killing 22 members of the Mozambique Defence Armed Forces (FADM) and wounding several others. The insurgents first attacked the base on the evening (local time) of Wednesday, January 22, but were driven away; they returned at approximately 08:00 on Thursday and gained control of the base. The insurgents reportedly stole arms and other equipment before destroying the base and withdrawing. The Islamic State Central Africa Province (IS-CAP) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the vicinity of the attack over the coming days. Similar attacks are possible over the near term.
