Nepal: Officials maintaining ongoing COVID-19 restrictions nationwide as of Jan. 15 /update 35

Nepal continuing COVID-19 restrictions as of Jan. 15. Travel ban from the UK ongoing.

Critical

Event

Nepal continues to maintain restrictions nationwide to curb the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as of Jan. 15. While visa-on-arrival schemes remain suspended for most travelers, foreign tourists can apply for visas at Nepali diplomatic facilities abroad. Foreigners must present negative results from a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for COVID-19 issued within 72 hours prior to departure. In addition, mountaineers and trekkers entering with a pre-approved visa must hold a hotel booking for at least one week, as well as medical insurance for COVID-19 worth at least USD 5000. Entrants must quarantine for at least two, and up to 14 days; trekkers typically undergo a hotel quarantine of seven days.

Officials have lifted most nationwide gathering restrictions, though some limitations remain. Most schools, religious institutions, and nonessential businesses have been allowed to reopen. Residents are still required to wear protective face coverings and adhere to social distancing guidelines while in public.

Local authorities in areas with COVID-19 cases typically enact enhanced localized curbs such as restrictions on movement, transport services, entry and exit, as well as nonessential businesses for up to 14 days. Travel to the Kathmandu Valley from other areas remains limited, with visitors required to have prior permission from the chief district officer, as well as proof of having tested negative for COVID-19. Vehicle restrictions such as the odd-even system are no longer applicable in Kathmandu Valley.

Travel Restrictions
International flights from select destinations are operational. Authorities continue to ban passengers from or transiting through the UK until further notice. On-arrival and electronic visa issuance remains suspended, except for foreigners officially affiliated with international development organizations and diplomatic missions. Foreigners already in Nepal may obtain visa extensions. Officials continue to advise Nepali citizens against nonessential international travel. Health checks are mandatory at all entry points. Land border crossings remain closed for foreign nationals, except with special permission.

Advice

Follow all official instructions. Abide by national health and safety measures. Reconfirm business appointments, deliveries, and travel arrangements. Consider delaying traveling if experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, as they may prompt increased scrutiny and delays. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates and guidance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Ensure contingency plans account for further disruptive measures or extensions of current restrictions. Reconsider and reconfirm nonemergency health appointments.

Emphasize basic health precautions, especially frequent handwashing with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable. Practice good coughing/sneezing etiquette (i.e., covering coughs and sneezes with a disposable tissue, maintaining distance from others, and washing hands). There is no evidence that the influenza vaccine, antibiotics, or antiviral medications will prevent this disease, highlighting the importance of diligent basic health precautions.
