Rastriya Prajatantra Party to rally in Kathmandu, Nepal, 1130 Jan. 1 amid nationwide royalist protests. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The Rastriya Prajantantra Party (RPP) has announced a rally at Bhrikuti Mandap 1130 Jan. 1. The action is part of a series of royalist demonstrations across Nepal through mid-January to demand the return of the Hindu monarchy in place of the secular republic. Organizers are also denouncing the recent parliament dissolution and the government's alleged corrupt practices and poor handling of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Supporters - including student unions, Hindu groups, and several political parties - are likely to hold vehicle rallies from multiple locations in Kathmandu and other urban centers to the event venue. Hundreds to thousands of people may participate. Other unannounced gatherings are likely to continue outside government buildings or at popular rally sites, such as prominent public squares, intersections, and parks.

Security forces are on high alert and have deployed to guard sensitive sites such as the prime minister's and president's residences. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor large demonstrations. Localized transport disruptions are likely near any large gathering; demonstrators may march on or block roads around the protest venue. Clashes between police and activists could occur; authorities may try to break up rallies to enforce COVID-19 gathering restrictions. Police have forcibly dispersed anti-governmental protests with water cannons and arrested protesters previously. Business disruptions are also possible, especially if violence occurs.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out nearby, take shelter in a secure, non-governmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Monitor trusted local news sources, as demonstrators may not announce protests in advance. Allow additional travel time near demonstrations. Confirm business appointments and transport reservations in advance.
