At approximately 2053 Jan. 5, a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) detonated along the 21st October Road in the Waberi district of Mogadishu. The target of the attack is believed to be an armored vehicle carrying the spokesperson for the Somali police force. Unconfirmed reports indicate the intended target survived the explosion and attack; however, at least one civilian bystander sustained injuries during the incident. As of yet, no group has formally claimed responsibility for the attack; however, Al-Shabaab routinely engages in similar attacks.

Heightened security is likely in the impact area in the coming hours. Security forces may close roads in the impact area as they respond to and investigate the incident. Disruptions to commercial operations are also possible.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large areas of southern and central Somalia and stages frequent attacks across the country, including in the capital city, Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the UN-backed government.

Advice

Avoid the blast site until authorities issue the all-clear. Heed the directives of the security officials. Plan for localized ground travel disruptions.
