Argentina: Aviation-sector strike planned nationwide Jan. 7-8

Unionized workers in the aviation sector to stage a nationwide strike in Argentina Jan. 7-8. Flight disruptions likely; protests possible.

Warning

Event

Workers for Argentina's National Civil Aviation Administration (Administracion Nacional de Aviacion Civil, ANAC) affiliated with the State Workers' Association (Asociacion de Trabajadores del Estado, ATE) plan to stage a nationwide strike Jan. 7-8. The work stoppage is to protest losses in wage value since 2015 and to demand improved salaries.

The strike is likely to mainly affect domestic flights, especially since international flights are highly restricted amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Lingering disruptions will probably continue even after the strike ends as carriers work through their passenger backlogs. Striking workers could also stage demonstrations at airports to further disrupt flight and airport operations.

Advice

Reconfirm flights in Argentina Jan. 7-8. Do not check out of hotels before verifying onward travel. Avoid protests as a precaution.
