Lebanon: Anti-government protesters to gather outside the Ministry of Justice in Beirut at 1200 Jan. 7

Anti-government protesters to gather outside the Ministry of Justice in Beirut, Lebanon, from 1200 Jan. 7. Avoid the area.

Warning

Event

Lebanese activists plan to hold an anti-government demonstration in the Palais de Justice neighborhood of Beirut on Jan. 7. The purpose of the action is to demand an independent judicial system. Protesters will gather at 1200 outside the Ministry of Justice. This latest planned protest comes amid ongoing anti-government demonstrations that began in October 2019 demanding an overhaul of Lebanon’s political system and the resignation of political elites.

Increased security measures, as well as localized transport disruptions, are likely near the protest site. Clashes between security personnel and protesters may materialize if demonstrators refuse orders to disperse or are overly disruptive.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a standard security precaution. Heed the instructions of local security personnel. Allow additional time if traveling through the affected area on Jan. 7.
