Senegal: Protests against COVID-19 measures in Senegal possible through January
Further protests against COVID-19-related curfew possible in Dakar, Senegal, following Jan. 6 demonstrations. Monitor for updates.
Event
Further protests are possible in Dakar, Senegal, following violent demonstrations in several areas of the city overnight Jan. 6-7. Demonstrations are linked to the imposition of restrictions, including a nightly 2100-0500 curfew, as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Associated incidents were reported in Medina, Niarry Tally, Grand-Yoff Yeumbeul, Guinaw-Rails Sud, Guediawaye, and Parcelles-Assainies. Protesters blocked roads with burning debris and attacked security forces with projectiles; security forces responded with tear gas. Reports of injuries or fatalities are currently unclear.
Security forces will almost certainly remain in the affected areas in the coming days. Localized road travel disruptions are likely near demonstrations that may occur. Protests in nearby Thies are also possible as similar restrictions are in place. Clashes between protesters and security forces are likely in the event of further demonstrations.
Advice
Avoid all large gatherings and protests as a precaution. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Adhere to all health measures in place.
