Informational

Event

Factory workers will likely stage additional protests in Tongi, Gazipur District, in the coming days following a Jan. 11 demonstration. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside a large factory in the town's Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) area to demand official action following alleged incidents of assault on workers. Participation in any future rallies will likely be similar to that of the Jan. 11 gathering. The protest venue is located approximately 5 km (3 miles) north of Shahjalal International Airport (DAC).

Additional security personnel have deployed in Tongi as a precaution. Police will likely continue to monitor demonstrations in the area. Transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations, as protesters could block sections of roadways. Clashes between police and protesters are possible.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the potential for violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Heed all instructions from security personnel. Allow additional travel time in the area.
