Spain: Residual disruptions to ground transportation ongoing in Madrid Jan. 11 following heavy snowfall

Aftermath of Storm Filomena prompts ground transport disruptions in Madrid region of Spain Jan. 11; residual impacts likely in coming days.

Warning

Event

Heavy snowfall is continuing to produce severe business and ground transportation disruptions in Madrid on Jan. 11, following the passage of Storm Filomena. Residents have been advised to avoid driving until the roads are cleared, which has prompted an increase in the use of public transport, including suburban trains. As the snow melts, flooding could cause further road blockages and transport disruptions in the coming days.

Flight operations at Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport (MAD) resumed late Jan. 10, following a temporary closure as Filomena transited the region.

Advice

Check route status before ground travel; allow significant extra time to reach destinations until roadways are cleared. Plan accordingly for crowding on public transport services and consider telecommuting options where possible.
