The Algerian Ministry of Defense has launched a security operation in the Bir El Ater region of Tebessa Province near the Tunisian border following the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED). The explosion, which was reportedly placed by militant groups active in the area, killed five civilians and wounded three others. Bir El Alter is about 497 km (309 miles) southeast of Algiers.

Security forces will likely remain deployed in the region and could establish checkpoints. Clashes between the Algerian People's National Army (ANP) and militant groups operating in the area are possible. Heightened security measures in the region will prompt localized transport and business disruptions.

Context

The incident - the deadliest attack on civilians in the past several years - comes amid ongoing government security operations across Algeria aimed at locating and eliminating active militant groups. Several terror groups, including Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Jund al-Khalifa, the Caliphate Soldiers, and Katibat Sahara, operate in Algeria. These militant groups regularly attack security forces, civilians, and foreigners.
