Human rights groups and local witnesses alleged that Cameroonian government troops killed at least nine persons, including civilians, during a raid on the village of Mautu in the nation's restive Southwest Region Jan. 10. Physicians serving with the organization Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) in the area reported treating at least four civilians for gunshot wounds received during the attack.

Defense officials have denied killing any civilians in the attack, though they have acknowledged conducting what they described as a preventative raid on terrorist positions in Mautu. The raid underscores the instability and violence that have gripped Cameroon's two English-speaking regions in recent years due to the ongoing conflict between Anglophone separatists and the central government.
