Warning

Event

Increased security measures, including large security contingents, have been reported in Lubumbashi early Jan. 15. The measures are reportedly in response to circulating reports of planned demonstrations in the city. There have also been unverified reports of a planned attack on the city by the Bakata-Katanga militia.

Heightened security measures are likely to remain in Lubumbashi in the coming days. Should protests occur, security personnel will almost certainly deploy to disperse the event; they may use force to disperse protesters if the latter are deemed to be overly disruptive, resulting in clashes. Localized ground transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of any protests that may occur.

Advice

Monitor for updates through at least evening hours Jan. 15. Plan for increased security and possible transport disruptions in Lubumbashi and its surrounding area. If protests or other forms of violence occur, leave the area immediately. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
