Activists plan protest at Karachi Press Club in Karachi, Pakistan, 1530 Jan. 16. Increased security likely; transport disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

The Aurat March civil organization plans to hold a protest outside the Karachi Press Club in Karachi at 1530 Jan. 16. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce sexual violence. Participants also intend to protest authorities’ treatment of singer Meesha Shafi, who is being investigated after lodging a harassment claim against another singer. Thousands of people have participated in previous rallies organized by Aurat March, but participation in the Jan. 16 rally will likely be affected by ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) gathering restrictions.

Security personnel will likely monitor the protest and may enforce COVID-19 gathering restrictions. While clashes are unlikely, isolated skirmishes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out. Protesters may block or march along nearby roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to possible skirmishes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional time near the rally site.
