Recent communal violence in South Darfur, Sudan, has resulted in dozens of casualties, as of Jan. 19. Follows West Darfur clashes, Jan. 16.

Warning

Event

Scores of people have been killed and wounded in further violence across western Sudan, as of Jan. 19. Media sources reported that clashes between rival groups in Gereida, South Darfur state, left at least 55 people dead and 37 wounded. Violence, which reportedly started Jan. 17, involved members of the Fallata and Rizeigat tribes. The conflict follows separate violence in West Darfur Jan. 16 which left dozens dead and wounded and led authorities to impose a statewide indefinite round-the-clock curfew. The violence in West Darfur occurred at the Krinding and Abu Zar camps. Armed militias reportedly attacked the locations after an individual from the Rizeigat tribe was stabbed during an altercation.

Tensions are likely to persist across the states in the coming days. Further bouts of violence are possible. Additional security personnel will almost certainly remain deployed throughout Gereida in response to the clashes. Increased security measures, such as roadblocks, a curfew, and additional security checkpoints, are likely and will prompt localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Exercise increased vigilance if operating in West and South Darfur states. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Heed all instructions from security personnel. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
