India: Activists plan statewide protests across Tamil Nadu Jan. 29

Pattali Makkal Katchi party plans protests in Tamil Nadu State, India, Jan. 29. Increased security likely; transport disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) party plans to hold statewide protests at district collectorates across Tamil Nadu Jan. 29. Organizers are demanding that more jobs and placements at academic institutions be reserved for members of the Vanniyar community. PMK leaders have made the demand a condition for continuing its alliance with the ruling All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Higher participation is probable in Vanniyar-dominant districts, such as Chengalpattu, Dharmapuri, Ranipet, and Salem. Participation in larger protests may range from hundreds to a few thousand people.

Security personnel will likely monitor protests and may try to break up more disruptive rallies. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators are possible, especially if police forcibly attempt to disperse protesters. Demonstrators may block or march along nearby roadways, causing localized transport disruptions. Police may also cordon off protest sites.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near rallies.
