Nepal: Sugarcane farmers to resume protests in Kathmandu from Jan. 23

Sugarcane farmers to resume protests in Kathmandu, Nepal, from Jan. 23. Increased security likely; localized transport disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

The Sugarcane Farmers Struggle Committee plans to resume protests in Kathmandu from Jan. 23. Farmers claim that sugar mills have not paid them the full amount owed for sold produce and are demanding government intervention in the dispute. The new protests will most likely occur near the Maitighar Mandala monument, where previous demonstrations over the issue took place during December 2020. Nevertheless, rallies cannot be ruled out near government buildings in central Kathmandu. Participation at any such gatherings will probably remain relatively low; the protests may continue through mid-February.

Security personnel will likely deploy to monitor the protests. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible, especially if police forcibly attempt to disperse demonstrators. Protesters may block or march along roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Monitor local media sources for updates on protests and road conditions, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near rally sites.
