Informational

Event

Opposition Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) party leaders have called for a demonstration at the Valluvar Kottam in Chennai from 1100 Jan. 25. The action is to demand investigations into the recent deaths of four Indian fishers following an alleged collision with a Sri Lankan Navy vessel. Allied parties and civil organizations may join the event; participation may be in the dozens to low hundreds.

Security personnel will likely deploy to monitor the protest. Localized transport disruptions are possible near the rally venue through Jan. 25, especially if demonstrators block or march on nearby roadways. Police may also set up roadblocks and security cordons in the vicinity, mainly near government buildings and political party offices, as a precaution. Although the event is likely to pass off peacefully, skirmishes may occur between police and activists in case of security cordon breaches.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration due to possible skirmishes. Allow additional time for ground transportation near the protest. Heed all traffic and security advisories.
