Netherlands: Activists to protest in central Amsterdam against COVID-19 measures Jan. 23 and 24

Activists plan to protest at Museumplein in Amsterdam Jan. 23 and 24 to denounce the government's ongoing restrictions related to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The protests will reportedly begin at 1600; however, some participants could gather earlier in the day. Hundreds of people could attend the demonstrations.

Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protests; associated security measures could prompt localized disruptions. Current COVID-19 measures in Amsterdam include the mandatory use of facemasks in crowded spaces and place strict restrictions on public gatherings; police could move to disperse protesters if they are deemed to be in breach of these restrictions. During a similar protest Jan. 17, police used water cannons to disperse the protest and over 100 people were arrested. Similar confrontations are possible at any unauthorized gatherings.
