Islamic State reportedly kills 11 members of the Popular Mobilization Forces in an attack in Salah Al-Din Governorate, Iraq, Jan. 23.

Warning

Event

Local media reported that at least 11 members of the Popular Mobilization Forces were killed in an attack in Salah Al-Din Governorate, Jan. 23. While no group has formally claimed responsibility for the attack, PMF officials have attributed the violence to Islamic State (IS) militants. The Popular Mobilization Forces are continuing to respond to the incident and have sent military reinforcements to the area to repel IS militants.

Authorities will likely maintain increased security in the area in the coming days. Localized transport disruptions are likely in Salah Al-Din Governorate through at least Jan. 24.

Context

Despite Baghdad's efforts to crack down on IS, the group still poses a significant threat and will likely remain a potent force for the foreseeable future. While IS was territorially defeated in Iraq in December 2017, the militant group maintains cells throughout western and northern Iraq, which are well-equipped, highly mobile, and likely retain the support of marginalized Sunni communities in the region.

Advice

Avoid the area until the situation stabilizes and authorities give the all-clear. Keep a safe distance from large concentrations of security personnel. Plan accordingly for road travel disruptions. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Heed the instructions of security officials.
