US: Activists continue protests near ICE building in Portland as of Jan. 23

Activists likely to continue sporadic nighttime protests near the ICE building in Portland, Oregon, US; violence reported late Jan. 23.

Warning

Event

Activists are likely to continue staging sporadic, potentially violent protests near the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in southern Portland, Oregon, over the coming days. Several gatherings have occurred since protesters vandalized the ICE facility Jan. 20; most recently, police reportedly used tear gas to disperse a gathering late Jan. 23. Demonstrators, who are calling for the abolishment of the ICE agency, typically hold their protests at night; Portland's ICE facility has been a major flashpoint for protests since 2020.

Clashes are possible at any upcoming protests if demonstrators do not disperse, or engage in additional acts of vandalism. Police may use tear gas and other means of force to clear the protests. Counterprotests are possible, thereby increasing the threat of clashes. The protests may cause persistent disruptions near the ICE facility over the coming days, especially at night.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Heed the directives of the authorities. Plan for potential localized traffic disruptions in the affected part of Portland at night over the coming days.
