India: Security forces engage Maoist rebels in Chhattisgarh February 25-26

Indian security forces engaged Maoist (Naxal) rebels in multiple areas of Chhattisgarh state on Tuesday, February 25, and Wednesday, February 26. Police officers exchanged gunfire with Naxal fighters in Bijapur district on Tuesday, February 25. Later in the day, three people were wounded after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near a security patrol along the Gangaloor-Kirandul border area. A similar confrontation was reported in Narayanpur district around 09:00 (local time) on Wednesday. At least one officer was wounded in the fighting. In Kankare, security forces recovered weapons and other material without any casualties after engaging with suspected rebels.

Similar security operations targeting Naxal fighters are likely in Chhattisgarh over the near term.

Context

An estimated 6000 people have died in the past 20 years as a result of the ongoing insurgency, though activities have decreased recently due, in part, to a security crackdown. Restrictions on the movement of foreigners are in place for some rural areas of eastern India, including parts of Chhattisgarh.
