Pakistan: Heightened security reported in Karachi, Rawalpindi during cricket test match December 10-23

Cricket test match to take place in Karachi and Rawalpindi December 10-23; heightened security measures and transportation disruption reported

A heightened security presence has been implemented ahead of two cricket test matches in Karachi and Rawalpindi as of Tuesday, December 10. The events are scheduled at the cricket stadium in Rawalpindi between Wednesday, December 11, and Sunday, December 15, and at the National Stadium in Karachi between Thursday, December 19, and Monday, December 23.

Significant transportation disruptions are expected in Islamabad and Rawalpindi as the Metro Bus Service between the twin cities has been suspended from 09:00 to 10:30 (local time) and from 16:00 to 18:00 through Sunday, December 15. Increased security measures and localized road closures, are expected in Karachi and Rawalpindi, notably in the vicinity of the events

Multiple international cricket teams suspended travel to Pakistan after seven Sri Lankan players were killed in an attack in Lahore in March 2009. In May 2015, a suicide bombing left two dead during a visit from a Zimbabwean team.

Individuals in Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad are advised to exercise caution and strictly avoid all large public gatherings, including sports matches, as they are at increased risk of being targeted in an attack. Monitor the situation over the coming days, anticipate heightened security measures, and follow any instructions issued by the local authorities.
