More than 50 soldiers reportedly killed amid clashes between Turkish and Syrian forces in Idlib province February 20; further clashes likely over the near term

Two Turkish soldiers were killed and another five were wounded by Syrian government airstrikes near Idlib on Thursday, February 20. According to Turkish defense officials, more than 50 Syrian soldiers were killed in a retaliatory assault. The Turkish raid also reportedly destroyed a number of armored military vehicles.

Further clashes between Turkish and Syrian forces are likely across Idlib province over the near term.

Context

To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.
