Papua New Guinea: 6.7-magnitude earthquake strikes east-northeast of Kainantu October 8

Event

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck 45 km (27 mi) east-northeast of Kainantu (Eastern Highlands province) on Thursday, October 8. The quake struck at 17:35 (local time) at a depth of 115 km (71 mi). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a notice stating that based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake. There have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g., under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
