Thailand: Opposition rally planned in Bangkok December 14

The Future Forward opposition party's leader has called for a rally in Bangkok on Saturday, December 14, to protest the national election body's decision to dissolve the party. The rally is expected to take place at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre skywalk (Pathumwan district) at 17:00 (local time).

According to authorities, no formal request for public gathering have been received by Bangkok district's police. It is not clear whether authorities will allow the gathering to take place.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the protest.

Context

Future Forward has been gaining a key role in the opposition since the party came third in March 2019 elections. Future Forward's leader, Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, have been found guilty of holding shares in a media company in November, disqualifying him to be a member of parliament.
Historically, Thailand was rocked by often deadly street protests between 2008 and 2014. The ruling junta has clamped down on freedom of expression since the 2014 coup and subsequently banned public gatherings.
