Avalanches in northern Jammu and Kashmir leave ten dead as of January 14; additional avalanches, landslides, and road closures possible over the near term

Ten people were killed between Monday, January 13, and Tuesday, January 14, when several avalanches hit northern Jammu and Kashmir. According to Indian police officials, five of those killed were soldiers stationed near the border between India and Pakistan.

Further avalanches, landslides, and power outages are likely in the Jammu and Kashmir over the coming days, as well as associated transportation and business disruptions.
