Croatia: Wind warnings issued for Velebit channel April 1

Weather officials issue red wind warnings (highest level) for Velebit channel on April 1; damaging winds and associated disruptions possible

The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) has issued red weather warnings (the highest on a four-tier scale) for the Velebit channel on Wednesday, April 1. Strong gale force winds with gust up to 65-130 kph (40-80 mph) are forecast along the channel. Hazardous maritime conditions are expected and there is a significant risk of coastal infrastructure damage. The DHMZ was advised the public to avoid traveling in the area as a precaution. An orange warning (the second highest) has also been issued for Rijeka region on Wednesday until 18:00 (local time).

Related transportation disruptions, including to ferry service, hazardous driving conditions, and power outages are possible over the coming hours.
