Thailand: Fine dust reported above safe levels in Bangkok December 10

As of Tuesday, December 10, the Thai Pollution Control Department (PCD) reported unsafe levels of fine dust across six areas in Bangkok. In the morning (local time), a PM2.5 fine dust concentration at 53 micrograms per cubic meter of air was recorded in the Bang Khen Laksi, Phasicharoen, Bang Sue, Pathumwan, Bang Kho Laem, and Khlong San districts.

The situation, triggered by stagnant air and heavy traffic, is likely to continue over the coming days.

Context

According to environmental groups, Bangkok is currently the tenth most polluted capital city in the world. Traffic congestion, railway and condominium construction, road works, and dry weather conditions are generally responsible for the worsening of air quality in the Thai capital.

A concentration of PM2.5 fine dust above 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air is considered unsafe.
