South Korea: Nationwide strike scheduled to be held on November 25

Nationwide labor union strike scheduled to be held on November 25; disruptions likely

Warning

Event

A nationwide labor union strike is scheduled to take place in urban centers throughout South Korea on Wednesday, November 25. The strike has been organized by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) and is being held to protest a proposed amendment to a labor bill that would prohibit workers from occupying a worksite while on strike. The bill will also allow International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions in the country.

Although related demonstrations cannot be ruled out, increased coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions in Seoul mean that gatherings are officially limited to 100 people. It remains unclear whether larger demonstrations planned for the capital will go ahead in light of the heightened restrictions. A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of any demonstrations.

Advice

Those in South Korea are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate localized disruptions, minimize time spent in the vicinity of demonstrations and political gatherings as a precaution, and heed any instructions issued by local authorities.
