Tribal attack in Abyei Area leaves 32 dead and 24 wounded January 22; similar attacks possible over the near term

Suspected Misseriya herders attacked a village in the disputed Abyei Area on Wednesday, January 22, killing at least 32 people and wounding 24 others. The attack took place at around 07:00 (local time), when tribesmen stormed the village of Kolom near Abyei town. The attackers reportedly burned down 20 houses and abducted at least 15 people in the attack.

A heightened security presence is expected in the vicinity of the incident. Similar attacks are possible in Abyei Area over the near term.
