Clashes occurred in Owerri, administrative capital of Imo State, early June 6. According to reports, unidentified assailants attacked the state police headquarters but were repelled by police officers, who shot and killed five of the assailants and wounded an unknown number more. Following the incident security personnel deployed to much of the central areas of the city.

The increased security force presence is likely to remain in the affected area through at least the rest of June 6. Road transport disruptions are almost certain in the impacted area. Further violence is possible.

Context

A similar attack took place early April 5, when unknown assailants attacked the police headquarters and nearby prison, resulting in the freeing of hundreds of prisoners.
