India: Violent protests in Shimla August 24

Violent anti-government protests break out in Shimla (Himachal) on August 24; further protests likely in coming days



On Friday, August 24, members of the Indian Youth Congress staged an anti-government demonstration in front of the Vidhan Sabha in Shimla (Himachal state). According to local sources, the demonstration turned violent, leading security forces to disperse protesters with water cannons. Reports indicate that at least ten demonstrators suffered injuries. Further demonstrations are to be anticipated in Shimla in the coming days. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are expected in the vicinity of any gatherings. 


Individuals present in Shimla are advised to avoid all associated public gatherings and rallies, anticipate transportation delays, and adhere to any instruction issued by local police.
