US: 5.7-magnitude earthquake hits west of Salt Lake City (Utah state) March 18

Event

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.7-magnitude earthquake 15.7 km (9.8 mi) west of Salt Lake City in Utah state at approximately 07:09 (local time) on Wednesday, March 18. The quake struck at a depth of 10.6 km (6.6 mi). Nearly 13,000 homes were reportedly without power as of 07:45 as a result of the earthquake. Some light infrastructure damage has been reported in the area, and the state's governor warned the public to avoid downtown Salt Lake City as officials assess the damage. No major damage or injuries were immediately reported. As of 08:14 on Wednesday, nearly 20 aftershocks have been recorded.

Further aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
