Indonesia: 5.0-magnitude earthquake hits near Laiwui January 17

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake strikes northwest of Laiwui (North Maluku) on January 17; no tsunami warning immediately issued

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.0-magnitude earthquake around 45 km (28 mi) northeast of northwest of Laiwui (North Maluku) on Friday, January 17. The quake hit at around 13:43 (local time) at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi). No tsunami warning was immediately issued. Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
