Indonesia: 5.5-magnitude earthquake strikes in the Banda Sea January 2

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake strikes east of Baubau (Banda Sea) December 19; no tsunami warning issued

The US Geological Survey recorded a 5.5-magnitude earthquake at 18:30 (local time) in the Banda Sea on Thursday, January 2. The quake occurred around 266 km (165 mi) east of Baubau at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). No tsunami warning has been issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.  

Advice

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
