DRC: Flooding leaves 39 dead in Kinshasa November 26

Heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding leaves 39 people dead in Kinshasa November 26; associated disruptions expected

Warning

Event

At least 39 people were killed in Kinshasa by flooding and landslides following torrential rains overnight between Monday, November 25, and Tuesday, November 26. The area around the University of Kinshasa was the most impacted, with at least three houses and a road destroyed by landslides. Rescue operations are ongoing as of Tuesday evening (local time).

Associated disruptions, including transportation disruptions, infrastructure damages, and power outages, are likely in the affected areas over the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
