US: Strong storms and tornadoes leave at least eight dead in Tennessee state March 3

A strong storm swept across Tennessee state late (local time) on Monday, March 2, and early on Tuesday, March 3, producing at least one tornado and leaving at least eight people dead and several others injured. One confirmed tornado touched down between Cookeville and Baxter, and another was reported in Nashville. At least 40 buildings in the Nashville area were damaged by the storm and more than 50,000 power outages have been reported statewide.

Metro Nashville Public Schools have been closed due to tornado damage across the city. Presidential primary voting will be delayed one hour in Davidson and Wilson counties.

The John C. Tune Airport (JWN) in West Nashville sustained significant damage in the storm and authorities have asked the public to avoid the airport until further notice. Nashville International Airport (BNA) is fully operational as of Tuesday morning, but airport authorities have warned that some crew members are experiencing difficulties getting to the airport due to poor road conditions, so flights may be delayed.

Heavy rains are expected to continue in Nashville through Tuesday morning as the storm system moves south. A tornado watch is in effect for neighboring Alabama state until 11:00 on Tuesday. Residual transportation disruptions, hazardous driving conditions, and power outages are expected over the coming hours and days.
