Clashes between residents and security forces in Mamoudzou injured ten security forces members on Saturday evening (local time), May 2, through to the early morning on Sunday, May 3. Tear gas was deployed to disperse crowds who threw stones at security forces. Some shops were looted amid the unrest, which resulted in moderate material damages. Some residents had reportedly gathered to partake in a form of traditional boxing (mourengué) before security forces intervened.

Similar clashes were reported on Tuesday, April 28, and Wednesday, April 29, and further incidents are possible over the near term.
