Kazakhstan: Protests possible amid Independence Day celebrations December 16

Authorities reportedly arrest activists planning demonstrations on Independence Day on December 16; heightened security presence and associated disruptions expected



Authorities have reportedly arrested several activists who they accuse of planning demonstrations around the country on Monday, December 16, to coincide with Independence Day. Protests are still possible, particularly in major urban areas. 

Monday and Tuesday, December 17, are public holidays in Kazakhstan. A heightened security presence and transportation and business disruptions are expected throughout Kazakhstan.


Kazakhstan declared independence from the Soviet Union on December 16, 1991. 


Individuals in Kazakhstan are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, avoid all public gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
