Hazardous air quality levels reported in Dhaka December 9; avoid outdoor activities



As of Monday, December 9, hazardous air quality levels have again been recorded in Dhaka, with an air quality index (AQI) reading of 159 at 15:00 (local time). An order against illegal brick factories using coal have been issued by the High Court on Tuesday, November 26, in an attempt to improve air quality across the capital. A heightened security presence has been reported around illegal brick factories as demolishing operations are ongoing. Air quality is expected to improve slightly over the coming days.


An AQI reading of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 moderate, and 101-200+ unhealthy.


Individuals in Dhaka are advised to monitor the situation, limit outdoor activities until the situation normalizes, and wear N95 rated masks for protection. Children and those with chronic respiratory illnesses should exercise increased caution. Individuals are advised to seek medical attention if experiencing breathing difficulties or other health concerns.
