At least two Al-Shabaab militants in Qunyo Barrow killed in airstrike carried out by US military on January 16; further military operations possible in the near term

US Africa Command, in conjunction with the Federal Government of Somalia, conducted an airstrike on Thursday, January 16, targeting members of Al-Shabaab in the vicinity of Qunyo Barrow. According to initial assessments, at least two militants were killed in the strike.

Further military operations against Al-Shabaab fighters, as well as attacks by Al-Shabaab, are possible throughout Somalia in the near-term.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.
