Kenya: Widespread heavy rains forecast April 17-21

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for several parts of the country from Friday, April 17, until at least Monday, April 20. Over 30mm (one inch) of rainfall is anticipated to fall in western, central and coastal regions, as well as in and around the capital Nairobi.

The worst-hit areas are forecast to include parts of Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Lamu, Tana-River, Taita Taveta, Nairobi, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Murang'a, Embu, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, and Samburu counties. Many other counties are likely to also be affected.

The KMD has warned that flooding and landslides are possible in some areas, and associated transport disruption is also likely to occur. 

Advice

Individuals in Kenya are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate lingering transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
